Marina Chan
Founder & Director, Alpha Commons

Marina Chan began her career in banking at Merrill Lynch for the Asian equity business before embarking on a new trajectory in education. She subsequently earned her master’s degree in education from Harvard University and has worked with students from K-16 across Asia and in the US through teaching, advising student startups, and leading professional development initiatives.

Marina’s work encompasses education consulting for corporates, nonprofits and academic institutions. Among her projects is the recent launch of an accelerator program for the MIT Hong Kong Innovation Node, which saw international student teams deliver IoT solutions to global challenges.

With a grant awarded by the Social Innovation and Entrepreneurship Fund, Marina founded Alpha Commons in 2015, a social enterprise promoting real-world problem solving through maker education. She holds a board position at the Hong Kong Red Cross Hospital Schools and is a CFA Charterholder.

The key to any successful business is the business model and the business plan. In this lecture, we shall address the following aspects in business plan (and more):

  • Why is business model essential for any startup and business
  • What are the basic elements in a business model
  • What is Business Model Canvas (BMC)
  • Example and/or Exercises (if possible) on BMC

Frederick WS Yung currently is a part-time lecturer of the MBA Programme of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) on entrepreneurial fund-raising and Honourary Trainer of the Hong Kong Business Angel Network (HKBAN). He was a Visiting Assistant Professor with the University of Nottingham Ningbo China (UNNC) Business School in the 2103/14 academic year and he carries with him more than 30 years of experience in marketing, business operation/ management, coaching of entrepreneurs in investment fundraising, nurturing start-ups, and running an incubator with over 100 start-ups.

Prior to joining UNNC, he ran the Business Incubation Programme of HK Science and Technology Parks Corporation (“HKSTP”) and had incubated more than 300 technology and design start-ups and had reviewed over 1,000 business plans. Before his tenure at the HKSTP, he was the Business Services Operations Director of Xerox (HK) Ltd, and was responsible for the profit and loss of the Office Supplies Department, ten retail outlets and Macau Operations. He also led a Business Process Re-Engineering team and set-up one of Hong Kong’s first integrated call centres that handled inquiries on sales, billing and order processing in products and maintenance services. Prior to working at Xerox, he was the Regional Field Services Marketing Manager of Digital Equipment Corporation (HK) Ltd for its 11 Far Eastern countries, and had also served as a senior executive in various companies including Dodwell Business Machines and Jardine Marketing Services Ltd.

Professor Yung is a Certified Programme Facilitator of Kepner-Tregoe’s Problem Solving and Decision Making course and Learning International Limited’s Professional Selling Skills course. He received his Bachelor of Commerce degree from Loyola College, Montreal Canada and his MBA from University of British Columbia, Canada.
